Meet Kimberly Brooks Mazella
"When I think about the healing and regeneration that occurs in nature, I feel optimistic about our innate human capacity for resilience and recovery."
STRIKING THE RIGHT CHORD
Describing herself as very analytical, Kim's work goes beyond just the immediate issues, looking for patterns of thoughts and behaviors. "Oftentimes we continue to use outmoded coping mechanisms which not only no longer serve us, but in fact are likely contributing to current problems." Using a variety of techniques and strategies, Kim is able to help her clients build a foundation of insight and increased self-awareness that ultimately creates change. In many ways, it can be an experience similar to those moments around the piano -- an uncovering of the pieces and finding how they fit together to create that state of perfect harmony.
It’s clear from the moment you start working with Kim that she certainly cares about your success. She invests the time to get to know you and understand your unique needs. Then she focuses her energy and expertise on achieving your goals. Ask anyone who knows Kim Mazella. When she cares about something, it shows. Her inner drive and determination push her to create exceptional results. With more than two decades of counseling and therapy experience, Kim brings her personal fortitude to work in her private practice every day. Nothing motivates her more than being able to help people find their authentic life.
Yet there is perhaps no greater metaphor for Kim’s theraputic approach than her love of music. The fact that she started taking piano lessons at age 5 is no surprise. “I come from a very musical family. My uncle was a well-known church organist and music teacher; my father played saxophone in a jazz band; my mother played piano and sang; and all of the kids learned to play instruments. I was given a love of music at a very young age, and I carry that with me today.”
Kim developed her appreciation of the power of synergy by accompanying the chorus all through her school years, and studying duo piano in high school and college. These musical collaborations made a lasting impression on Kim. “I love that moment when you’re playing the piano, and people are standing around you singing, and it all comes together,” she says. “The pitch is just right, the timing is just right, the music is just right. Everything is in perfect balance and harmony.” It’s an important principle that Kim now brings into her professional life.
USING MUSIC TO HELP OTHERS
A favorite high school teacher introduced Kim to the field of psychology in her senior year. When she discovered that music could be used to help other people, Kim made the decision to study music therapy at Florida State University, one of the leading programs in the field. This was followed by a clinical internship at the Georgia Mental Health Institute in Atlanta. Kim then earned a Master’s degree in clinical psychology, and completed post-graduate work at Johns Hopkins University.
"My husband and I sit back and reflect with amazement about the past year..... to see where I (and we) started and where we are now. Kim, I will never be able to thank you enough for EVERYTHING that you have done for me!!"
